Victoria Park Infant and Junior Schools
Consultation is taking place on the proposed amalgamation of Victoria Park Infant and Junior Schools with effect from September 2009. Details of the proposal are contained in the consultation document available by using the links to the left of this page. Responses by 25 July 2008 please.
Sea Mills
Consultation is underway on the proposed amalgamation of Sea Mills Infant and Sea Mills Junior with effect from September 2009. It is planned to provide a new school building at Riverleaze which would also include Children’s Centre provision.

Weston Park Primary School and Bluebell Valley Nursery School
Consultation is taking place on the proposed amalgamation of Weston Park Primary School and Bluebell Valley Nursery School with effect from September 2009.

Special Needs proposals for Brislington Enterprise College and Florence Brown
Consultation has taken place on the following special educational needs proposals.
Proposal 1 - To change the management of the physically impaired provision (Courtlands Unit), to be established on the site of Brislington Enterprise College, from Florence Brown Community School to Brislington Enterprise College.
Proposal 2 - To establish autistic provision at Brislington Enterprise College.

A further representation period on these proposals will last from 16 May until 27 June 2008.
Kingsdon Manor Special School
On 10 April the Cabinet agreed that Kingsdon Manor School should close at the end of this academic year. As part of the SEN Provision Strategy, the city is seeking to get the best value for money from its specialist provision by reducing over capacity, where this exists and investing in increasing the numbers and quality of provision where this is needed particularly-day BESD, secondary SLD / PMLD provision in the north, and secondary autism.
Secondary Schools
- A proposal to close of Portway Community School was published on 11 March 2008. The proposal is that the school will close on 31 August in order that the new Oasis Academy, Brightstowe can open on 1 September.
- The Bristol Metropolitan College (formerly Whitefield Fishponds School) will open its new buildings, delivered under the national Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, on 21 April 2008.
- The new Bristol Brunel Academy was officially opened by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in September 2007 and was the first school in the UK to be redeveloped and reopened under the BSF programme - a fantastic achievement for the city.
- The BSF programme will also deliver new buildings for Brislington Enterprise College in September 2008 and the new Hartcliffe Campus, which will deliver an innovative approach to all-through education provision in South Bristol in January 2009.
- The new Redland Green School building opened to pupils in September 2007. Located in Redland Court Road, the building will eventually accommodate 945 11-16 year-olds together with 450 places for post-16. It is also home to the secondary department of Claremont School, offering 50 places for pupils with physical impairment, severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties. - The new Fairfield High School building opened in April 2006 at Allfoxton Road. The school provides 1080 places for 11-16 year-olds, together with inclusive provision for 40 deaf and hearing impaired pupils. The school will have playing fields on the Boiling Wells site (previously used by St Thomas More School) and part of South Purdown.
- On 27 September 2005 the School Organisation Committee agreed to the closure of Withywood Community School in order that an Academy could be established on the site. The school will close with effect from 31 August 2008 and the Merchants' Academy Withywood will open on 1 September 2008.
- On 27 June 2006 the School Organisation Committee agreed to the closure of Hengrove Community Arts College in order that an Academy could be established on the site. The school will close with effect from 31 August 2008 and the Oasis Academy will open on 1 September 2008.
- The first phase of PFI school rebuilds, Bedminster Down, Henbury, Monks Park and Portway opened in 2005/6.
Primary Schools
Seven new primary schools opened in September 2006 and one in September 2007 following amalgamations of existing schools.
The new Primary School and Children’s Centre in Barton Hill opened its new purpose-designed building in November 2007. The Children’s Centre will offer a range of services for families. The building also provides community facilities and ‘extended school’ provision.
