Policy and Procedures for Monitoring, Support, Challenge & Intervention

Every local authority is required to set out how it supports and challenges all schools and in addition how it identifies, supports and challenges schools which are causing concern in order that they improve. This means that local authorities need to:

  • know their schools sufficiently well to make effective judgements about the progress they are making towards agreed targets
  • challenge and support all schools to improve
  • identify, celebrate, share and disseminate effective practice
  • target support to secure improvement in schools causing concern or schools at risk of failing
  • have clear processes to identify early and provide challenge and support to schools causing concern
  • intervene in schools as required and use their statutory powers to secure improvements.

This policy and set of procedures, revised in March 2007, sets out the approach of Bristol local authority to these matters in the light of a number of significant national developments.

  • Every Child Matters
  • Revised Ofsted Inspection Framework
  • New Relationship with Schools
  • The Education and Inspection Act 2006
  • Financial Management Standards for Schools

The Local Authority is required to establish, and agree with schools, local procedures to reflect this statutory framework and LA requirements.
