In March 2007 Bristol’s Early Years & Childcare Service submitted a bid to the National Sure Start Unit to become one of three Local Authorities in the South West to devise and run a pilot project to engage parents in their children’s learning. In April 2007 the bid was approved and we were successful in securing funding until the end of March 2008 to implement the project.
There are two projects that we are running in Bristol to support parents in participating in their children’s learning, and each project has a targeted audience. Both projects are aimed at improving the communication, language and literacy of children moving through an early years setting into school.
Project 1
Project 1 is the development a resource tool to be delivered to parents as partners in their children’s learning. Parents are given an age appropriate resources pack for them to share with their child, containing objects, books and an information guide. This learning tool will be used as part of a developmental journey. The project is being piloted at 2 Children’s Centres in Bristol (Hartcliffe Children’s Centre and Barton Hill Primary School & Children’s Centre).
Project 2
Project 2 is a developmental tool to not only engage parents in their children’s learning but to also engage them in creating low cost resources to use with their children. The project involves the creation of CD Rom games (e.g. Snap Cards, Lotto Boards and Dominoes) which are personal to the family using them and is being piloted at 3 settings in Bristol (Hartcliffe Children’s Centre, Barton Hill Primary School & Children’s Centre and St James & St Agnes Nursery School).
